Roundup - Week 49

Congratulations to the Huntly club for yet again turning on a great end-of-season tournament. The talent that comes out of the woodwork in fear and trembling of the approaching dearth of bridge. It was like squirrels storing nuts against the winter! The top dozen places were a virtual Who's Who of bridge at the pointy end of NZ.

NZB Letter to all Clubs 9-Dec 2016

The Board's Position:

Roundup - Week 48

So unexpected: season's winding down - news content rocketing up. It's all happening in the Mighty Wai-kato/Bays! The Christmas spirit is upon us all with lots of parties and dress-ups. Final flings before the long hard winter of the soul as we take a whole week off from bridge over Christmas.

Mini-Moos Open to ALL

Spreading the JOY to all newbies over Christmas ... open access has been provided to the acclaimed MINI-MOOS package. Details of what it's all about may be seen under the Resources tab above (Mini-Moos item). Anyone is invited to use any of the material which is freely available in Dropbox. If clubs were willing to deal the boards for anyone keen to continue learning over the holidays, it would be way better than random deals to play the Mini Moos deals with guided commentary on bidding and play.

Congratulations to ...

  • Nick Cantlon of Te Awamutu
  • Ella Gray of Hamilton
  • Phil Thompson of Hamilton

who are all now qualified Club Directors

Roundup - Week 47

Anna Kalma will be wearing yet another hat in 2017, having taken up the mantle of Waikato Area Pairs Manager vacated by Jane Stearns. Although Jane set the bar amazingly high, Anna has made a great start with this whimsical poster of a Mr Wappy van.

A reminder to all who may not have spotted it yet, that this site features a Virtual Notice Board (the blue square to the right) upon which we try to maintain posters for all tournaments in the whole region. This becomes much easier if clubs save their posters in dropbox/Waikato-Bays Clubs Info/Tournament Posters to which all clubs should have access.

Karen Martelletti on the IPs in Dunedin

The IPs have just finished and I just want to say thank you to the committee for the efforts in securing funding and paying for the accommodation.

New Directors Course Offered

Rona Driscoll, chair of the WBRC, writes:
To all Waikato Bays clubs:

The Waikato Bays Regional Committee is arranging for one or two weekend seminars next year, aimed at new and prospective directors. We will let you know the details of these in due course. However, if you don't want to wait, you might like to consider directing training in Taupo during January.

Roundup - Week 46

T'is the season of AGM's at many clubs around the region. The changing of the guard and much reshuffling of portfolios, etc - you know the drill. Elections at such events are rare these days; most clubs seeking to inveigle new blood onto their committees. And there's noting wrong with that - new blood often brings new ideas. There are many talented people amongst our learners - people with skills in a great many fields other than bridge. What do you need to know about bridge to help run a club? Not much, really, but exposure to the odd back-room questions of policy and administration can be valuable background to someone coming in fresh.

Roundup - Week 45

The Christmas Party season began with 17 tables at Thames's event on Sunday the 13th. This is set to be followed in succeeding weeks, like a troup of parading elephants, by similar seasonal festivities at Te Awamutu, Waikato, Rotorua, and Huntly.
