**NEW** Restricted 3A Open Tournaments

New Zealand Bridge has recently introduced a new tournament category based on
feedback from clubs and players. The 3A point category is designed for players who are
between high-level intermediates and lower-ranked open grade participants, specifically
up to the National Master level. Participants will no longer encounter higher-ranked open
players, such as grand masters. The new events are named Restricted 3A Open. Expanded information relevant to thw Waikato-Bays clubs is in the attachment below

Rubber Bridge in the Mighty Wai-Kato

It would be great to see a mighty host of pairs entering to make a grand regional competition, The winners go forward to compete in the final against the winners of other regions at Congress in November. Generous cash prizes thanks to the Dan Gifford trust

New Rules for Tournaments

There seems to be some confusion about the latest set of tournament rules released by NZB in July of last year

3A tournaments - these can only be consolation tournaments at congresses etc EXCEPT a 3A point stand alone tournament that is Restricted Open - this is restricted by the Rank of player permitted to enter it is only open to players on National Master or below Ranks

An 8B Restricted tournament is one in which a pair can only consist of one Open grade player and the other player any other grade

Alan Dick Steps Down From the WB Chair

Alan DickAlan DickIt has always been my intention to step down from the Chair on the WBRC – and other organisations – once I attained a certain age. I believe that to carry on would be detrimental to the Committee, the game and the programs or activities that are needed to achieve the purpose of the Committee. There would also be the danger of group think and no new ideas.

We have made huge strides in the Region with the Directors and Scorers fora. We have changed the way teams are selected for the Regional finals – also always meeting NZB changes and needs on the way. The Mini Moos have been revived under the new name PIPS. Not all of these changes have met unqualified support but in general the clubs have supported these initiatives very well and we now have more resources to call on for various tasks – especially at the qualified Director level.

Intermediate League Final Result

The Intermediate League eighth and final leg was held at Cambridge with a great turnout of twenty tables. Hearty congratulations to Bettina Dudley and Rosemary Wilkey who took the top two spots. They were followed closely by Ted Cliffin and Barbara McFarlane with fifth and sixth places going to Luda Watts and Irenee Stewart after strong performances on the day. Just five points covered the top six places. Well done to all participants. See you back for more in 2026.

WB Junior League Wrapped Up

Hamilton's Iain Patterson and partner Larissa Eyre blitzed the field over the six rounds of this season-long series. They finished with 25 points - well clear of second-placed Alan and Joanne McLean of Mt Maunganui on 18 points. The final round was held at the Te Awamutu club on Sunday 12-Oct. He asks clubs to ensure all Novice, Junior and Intermediate players are made aware of the Leagues for 2026 and to encourage their participation in these Junior 3B and Intermediate 8B tournaments throughout the region

2025 Grade Teams Winners Decided

The finals of the WB Grade Teams were contested at the Matamata club on Sunday 24-Aug. For this event each side of The Hill puts up its top two teams in each grade ... twelve tables in all. Thanks to director Nick for the attached file with pics of the winners in each grade. Jan Spaans scored the event using Compass' Multi-Grade Teams module. Full results may be found on this site.
