2016 Bay of Plenty Pairs.
The final round of the 2016 Bay of Plenty Championship Pairs was hosted by the Te Puke Bridge Club.
Going into the final round it was very tight at the top with less than an average of 4% separating the top four pairs and the top two pairs within 0.5% of each other. But with a magnificent final session score of 70% Stephen Francks and Allan Turner (Tauranga), taking out the overall Bay Pairs Title for 2016. Second overall was Kate Terry and Judy Pawson with Julie Sheridan and Karen Martelletti taking third spot.

One of the big events of the WBRC year - the one where we all show our faces - the annual Regional Conference was held at the Matamata rooms last Sunday. Full report further down, but an incredible discovery was announced.

Waikato Bays Rubber Bridge champions

Congratulations to Jo & Sam Simpson from Tauranga, who are the 2016 Waikato Bays Rubber Bridge Champions.

Thank you to all the other pairs who played this year and supported rubber bridge in our region. We had many more entries than in previous years, so I hope you all enjoyed it and will come to play again next year. Even better, bring another pair with you!

Regional Conference takes place at Matamata

Thirteen of the region's 23 clubs were represented by 19 attendees on Sunday the 18th of September along with members of the NZ Bridge board Karen Martelletti and Alan Turner and four of the five Waikato-Bays Regional committee, Ian Moore being overseas. The theme of the day was "Growing our Clubs".

The Thames Restricted was a seminal event for Heartland Bridge. Held at the Brown St rooms last Sunday it attracted 20 tables. Home club Thames was delighted to claim a top place in the Junior-Junior section.

It was the Mini-Moo's day at Cambridge last Sunday. You can read several success stories celebrating the prowess of the Region's newest players - the winners came from the Matamata club, Cambridge took second placing while newbies from Huntly and Hamilton shared third on the day.

Bridge PoliceBridge PoliceRotorua are announcing that they've finally come over to The Dark Side by joining the 27 other clubs that play the X-Clubs deals and, by the look of things, Mount Maunganui are picking up where Caroline and Murray Wiggins left off at the Cambridge Sixes.

Grade Teams Final thrashed out at Cambridge

Teams from each end of the region gathered at Cambridge on the last Sunday of August to sort out who would be taking home the three Grade Trophies. This was the final stanza of what started off as the Inter-Club Teams in the Waikato, and the Bay Teams in the Bay of Plenty. The winning and runner-up teams in each grade from each region met in Cambridge to play in three parallel round-robins of three 16-board matches. An Intermediate and a Junior team came all the way from Whakatane, and a couple of Intermediate teams traveled from Thames and Taupo.

The two major happenings of the week were the 7th round of the WB Intermediate League held at Te Awamutu and the announcement of three new directors for the region - both reported on this site.
