WB Intermediate League Down to the Wire

After Sunday's penultimate heat of the nine events scheduled for the Waikato-Bays Intermediate League we have a tie for first on 28 points between Eunice Eccles of Cambridge and Malcolm Kirkby of Te Aroha. With five other players six or seven points behind there is an outside chance that these two could be overtaken. It is possible to score the maximum of nine points for the final day at Cambridge on 28th October.

Stratified Pairs - a New Concept

The Thames club held its annual Restricted tournament on Sunday 9th September .. but with a twist this year. Instead of the usual groupings by grade where prizes go to best O-I, O-J, I-I, I-J, J-J pairings the club opted to go with Stratified - a format new to Compass scoring. Although this sort of event is popular in Top of The South region it is new to most of the North Island. It works by taking an average of each pairs' Rating Points - the number you are given at the start of each season which is intended to reflect your current form. Compass allows to split the field by these averages into as many groups as the club wants. You can see the day's result by clicking here.

Calling All YOUTH Players

New Zealand Bridge has, for a long time, maintained a register of Youth players for whom the opportunities are immense! At the pointy end, players of only a few year's experience have found themselves representing New Zealand at overseas venues. Closer to home NZB runs a training weekend in Wellington which costs attendees mere peanuts. And around the country clubs and dedicated people are only too keen to put youth players on a fast track to success.

Good luck to Nick Whitten and Janice Bell from Morrinsville. They had to be victorious in five matches to become the Waikato Bays rubber bridge champions. They now go to National Congress on Friday 28 September to try for the National Rubber Bridge title. Wish them well!

Grade Teams Final

Twelve teams turned out to contest the Grade Teams trophies at Cambridge on Sunday 26th August. They played 16-board round-robins in three pools of four teams. In the Open section Tauranga took home the shield and also prevailed in the Intermediate, and Waikato, who were represented in all grades, won the Junior. TWITs come to an end

The final of six Friday sessions took place at the Hamilton club on the 24th August. Teams, having met each other twice in a double round-robin over five nights, had the pleasure of playing everyone in their grade at Multiple Teams to finish the series. Best clubs in the Waikato Bays converge on Cambridge

Well done to the Tauranga club that won two of the three divisions at the Waikato Bays interclub held in Cambridge today … Waikato Club gave the Waikato region some kudos by winning the Junior division for the second year in a row and were the only club to feature a team in each division.

It was a good day of bridge with three sessions of 16 boards played as a round robin. Alan Dick was the director and the Cambridge club were great hosts. Well done to all that represented their clubs today.

Characters reminiscent of AA Milne’s Christopher Robin stories arrived from all over the North Island including TARAWAKI!

PUB CHARITY provides for WB IP Accommodation

The Waikato Bays Regional Committee once again applied to Pub Charity Ltd for funding to assist our Inter-Provincial representative team with accommodation during the Inter Provincial Championship at the end of the year.

We are very pleased to announce that the application was successful, having received $3469.57, which was the amount we applied for.

Our committee is extremely grateful to Pub Charity Ltd as their grant ensures we are able to fund other activities rather than siphon of our funding in this area.
