Grade Teams Final

Twelve teams turned out to contest the Grade Teams trophies at Cambridge on Sunday 26th August. They played 16-board round-robins in three pools of four teams. In the Open section Tauranga took home the shield and also prevailed in the Intermediate, and Waikato, who were represented in all grades, won the Junior. TWITs come to an end

The final of six Friday sessions took place at the Hamilton club on the 24th August. Teams, having met each other twice in a double round-robin over five nights, had the pleasure of playing everyone in their grade at Multiple Teams to finish the series. When the dust settled the final placings were:

Best clubs in the Waikato Bays converge on Cambridge

Well done to the Tauranga club that won two of the three divisions at the Waikato Bays interclub held in Cambridge today … Waikato Club gave the Waikato region some kudos by winning the Junior division for the second year in a row and were the only club to feature a team in each division.

It was a good day of bridge with three sessions of 16 boards played as a round robin. Alan Dick was the director and the Cambridge club were great hosts. Well done to all that represented their clubs today.

The Mythical MermaidsThe Mythical MermaidsOnce upon a time there were great celebrations at the Sir Don Rowlands centre at Lake Karapiro. It was a sixth birthday party of Cambridge SIXES. Characters reminiscent of AA Milne’s Christopher Robin stories arrived from all over the North Island including TARAWAKI!

PUB CHARITY provides for WB IP Accommodation

The Waikato Bays Regional Committee once again applied to Pub Charity Ltd for funding to assist our Inter-Provincial representative team with accommodation during the Inter Provincial Championship at the end of the year.

We are very pleased to announce that the application was successful, having received $3469.57, which was the amount we applied for.

Our committee is extremely grateful to Pub Charity Ltd as their grant ensures we are able to fund other activities rather than siphon of our funding in this area.

Shh .. don't spread this around ...

From Friday's WB Regional Committee meeting .. so far we have only one nomination to take advantage of the four entries each to the value of $200 on offer to attend Congress events. Entries close 26th Aug - details attached. Applicants can self-nominate or be nominated by a club. Seems a pity to see it going to waste ... if we snow Jan with names we could get $800 worth of Congress entries for our club (shh .. don't spread it around the other clubs).

Record Attendance at the Cambridge Sixes

According to directors Murray and Caroline Wiggins - who should know - the Cambridge Sixes is not only the long-claimed biggest one-day event in the country but also the third largest after National Congress and Hawkes Bay Congress. This year they were pleased to attract a record sixty-six tables to their sixth birthday. Held at the magnificent Sir Don Rowlands Centre bordering Lake Karapiro the fun-loving crowd was able to enjoy the sunny terraces over lunchtime. The catering was, as usual, sumptuous. Two things go to making up a memorable tournament - the food and the venue.

It's a Wrap for the WAPs

Lesley and SoniaLesley and SoniaThe sixth and final round of the Waikato Area Pairs was held at the Morrinsville club last Sunday the 5th of August. A cruisy 60 and a 52 were enough to hold onto top slot for Lesley Quilty and Sonia Crawford who claimed the sum of their ages to far exceed that of any other partnership in the room. Certainly these ladies have been at the forefront of the game for as long as most people can recall and it is awesome to see them still going strong.

The WAPs AGM was held at lunchtime and, after some discussion, it was agreed nothing much needed changing any time soon. After play we were treated to a couple of dozen pizzas and a glass of choice to wind up the series.

The Mount Cleans Up Large at the Bay Teams

Half a dozen of the Bay clubs gathered at Rotorua last Sunday to contest the Ib Thulin Shield which, when the dust settled, went to the Mount Maunganui club this year. The day's results can be viewed by clicking this link.

That leaves us with 12 teams to contest the WB Grade Teams final at Cambridge on 26th of August. The two top-placed teams in each grade from either side of The Hill will play off in three separate sections of 16-board round-robins. Teams from the following clubs are invited to attend:
