Rating Points & Tournament Grades 2019

Player rating points updated correctly on Jan 1st and the new tournament grades for 2019 are now available on the NZB site.

NZB Secretary Alister reported the transfer of Australian Masterpoints has not worked for a number of months. He expects the developers to put a fix in place when they return to work. All of the files received from the ABF have been saved and will be uploaded as soon as possible.

WBRC Road Map for 2019

In a recently released newsletter (attached below) your Regional Committee lays out its plans for the 2019 season. Key items include:

  • The Thames Festival which runs from 11-13 January
  • The Intermediate Champions League with double the prize money - $1080
  • The Junior Champions League with four times the prize money at $960
  • A directing seminar by Allan Joseph - date tba
  • Rubber Ducky Day at Putaruru on 7th April
  • Re-Introduction of the Youth Policy
  • Congress Sponsorship for aspiring debutantes
  • The Regional Conference set for 22nd September at Matamata
  • Plan and intent for the IP Trials to be held at Tauranga on 11th & 12 May

The committee wishes all bridge players a safe and happy new season.

Dust Settles from the 2018 IP's

Kathy and JoKathy and JoUnder the expert captaincy of CDM Karen Martelletti your Waikato team contesting this year's Inter-Provincials in Auckland did very well this last weekend. Karen reports it was touch and go as to whether they brought home a trophy. Kathy Yule is said to forever blame herself on a board in the last match where she was in 4SX and the opponents gave her a chance to make it ... but she she didn't.

It is now a few months since you have had a report from the Chair. We have not been standing still in the intervening months.

At the AGM we had the pleasure of inducting two new life members- Alan Turner (Tauranga) and Robyn Young (Renwick) - for their service to the game over a very long period. There was a very positive vibe at the AGM.

IP PosterIP PosterThe InterProvincials take place over the weekend of 24-26 November. All seven regions have four teams entered to do battle for the Dougal McLean trophy.

All club members are invited to join in the competition by watching your Region's representatives live on BBO. By going to http://www.bridgebaseonline.com and choosing Vugraph - you will be able to sit at the table where matches are being shown live from Auckland.

The action kicks off at 10.45am on Saturday 24 November. The attached poster gives details of the planned matches for the first round-robin matches (subject to change). You might see it displayed display prominently in your clubrooms. Please forward it to your club members if you have an email circulation list and ask for it to be announced at your playing sessions. The results from all matches will be posted live to the NZB website. The second round draw will appear on the NZB facebook page once known.

November Head Count Way Up

November has traditionally been the month in which player numbers peak. This year it is most pleasing to record the highest tally for at least the last four years since this site started taking notice of such a thing. It is pretty obvious that the efforts of Jane Stearns in promoting the concept and realisation of Regional Bridge Mates have been, in large part, responsible for this surge in uptake of our game. All credit to the teachers and buddies in all the clubs, too, of course.

WB Intermediate League Wraps Up

WBRC member Michael Neels presents the Intermediate Champions Trophy to Eunice Eccles of Cambridge and Malcolm Kirkby of Te Aroha. This winning pair had a clear lead going into the final round in Cambridge on Sunday 28th October but they could be caught! They would have been relieved at lunch time to find they were top of the room after the morning session. However, they slipped in the afternoon, but not enough of a slide to rob themselves of the championship they had their eye on.

They're getting younger by the year. How about this: 11-year-old Ryan Song and his team made the cut to play in the final of Labour Weekend's mini-Congress in Hamilton. Pictured here with team-mates Andrew and William Liu and Herman Yuan, Team Song came a creditable 5th of the 24 teams that started the event. Other results from the weekend may be found on the Hamilton site.

Four-Way Tie for Winners of the WB Junior League

Mike, Angela, Megan, JaniceMike, Angela, Megan, JaniceTe Awamutu Bridge Club hosted the final session of the 2018 Waikato Bays Junior Championship League on Sunday 14th October. It was always tight at the top with but a single point between the leading four going into the day. When the dust settled Tauranga's Mike and Angela Newton's second placing gave them that one more point they needed to tie with Megan Jolly and Janice Wilton of Hamilton.

On Saturday the 28th September the organisation held its AGM. We had the pleasure of approving two new life members - Alan Turner and Robin Young. Both have shown their love for the game and their desire to pass on that enjoyment to others by their great service to the game. We were able to acknowledge and celebrate both Alan and Robin at the opening of Congress.
