From Friday's WB Regional Committee meeting .. so far we have only one nomination to take advantage of the four entries each to the value of $200 on offer to attend Congress events. Entries close 26th Aug - details attached. Applicants can self-nominate or be nominated by a club. Seems a pity to see it going to waste ... if we snow Jan with names we could get $800 worth of Congress entries for our club (shh .. don't spread it around the other clubs).

Record Attendance at the Cambridge Sixes

According to directors Murray and Caroline Wiggins - who should know - the Cambridge Sixes is not only the long-claimed biggest one-day event in the country but also the third largest after National Congress and Hawkes Bay Congress. This year they were pleased to attract a record sixty-six tables to their sixth birthday. Held at the magnificent Sir Don Rowlands Centre bordering Lake Karapiro the fun-loving crowd was able to enjoy the sunny terraces over lunchtime. The catering was, as usual, sumptuous. Two things go to making up a memorable tournament - the food and the venue.

It's a Wrap for the WAPs

Lesley and SoniaLesley and SoniaThe sixth and final round of the Waikato Area Pairs was held at the Morrinsville club last Sunday the 5th of August. A cruisy 60 and a 52 were enough to hold onto top slot for Lesley Quilty and Sonia Crawford who claimed the sum of their ages to far exceed that of any other partnership in the room. Certainly these ladies have been at the forefront of the game for as long as most people can recall and it is awesome to see them still going strong.

The WAPs AGM was held at lunchtime and, after some discussion, it was agreed nothing much needed changing any time soon. After play we were treated to a couple of dozen pizzas and a glass of choice to wind up the series.

The Mount Cleans Up Large at the Bay Teams

Half a dozen of the Bay clubs gathered at Rotorua last Sunday to contest the Ib Thulin Shield which, when the dust settled, went to the Mount Maunganui club this year. The day's results can be viewed by clicking this link.

That leaves us with 12 teams to contest the WB Grade Teams final at Cambridge on 26th of August. The two top-placed teams in each grade from either side of The Hill will play off in three separate sections of 16-board round-robins. Teams from the following clubs are invited to attend:

TWITs Heating Up

The six-week series of The Waikato Inter-Club Teams is approaching its penultimate round to be held at the Hamilton Bridge Club on Friday 27th July. Things are tight at the top in the competition for Indie Twit. Radars Lot is stretching out in front in the Junior and Waikato Wonders looks to be unassailable in the Oscars.

As there have been five teams in the Juniors and seven in the Indies we have been having a guest appearance by a different Indie team in the Juniors each month. This time it will be Hamilton Mosaic sitting at Table 1 while Ringers will play at Table 11. Here are the current placings:

It's about now that one gets the feeling that the season is at "shoulder" as we approach the main event of the year .. being NZ's own National Congress. This, of course, is still some way off at the end of September. Nevertheless, we have just this last weekend seen the completion of the Bay Pairs with Kate Terry and Judy Pawson of Tauranga coming out on top.

Check out this article concerning an exciting new contest between clubs. Tauranga and Cambridge have a similar level of competition on Wednesday nights - fun/social/newbies type of thing. Karen Martelletti had an inspiration to compare scores using X-Clubs results. The first night was really close.

HUNTLY go INTERNATIONAL!!

John, Lynne and AndreasJohn, Lynne and AndreasWell done to Huntly Club who took part in the UK’s Bill Hughes Memorial Simultaneous Pairs on Friday, June 29th. John Gates and Andreas Theodorou won the Huntly heat with a great score of 62.96%. All heat winners receive two small prizes and a trophy to keep. Huntly say their results have not yet materialised on the global stage but the players wait with bated breath! This event is held each year during the week containing the last Tuesday in June.
