Roundup - Week 33

The two major happenings of the week were the 7th round of the WB Intermediate League held at Te Awamutu and the announcement of three new directors for the region - both reported on this site.

Latest Round of the WB Intermediate Championship

The seventh round of the Waikato-Bays Championship League for Intermediate players took place at Te Awamutu on Saturday the 12th. Winning both sessions and the overall earned Mark Thomson and Jeffrey Chang of Hamilton the maximum score of nine points for the day. They also regained the lead in the competition from their co-IP-reps, Hattie Curtiss and Bruce Ballard of Waihi/Katikati to edge ahead on the ladder. With just two more rounds to go on 9th and 30th of October this competition could be pretty close.

Sparked by the outpouring of joy over the Cambridge Sixes your correspondent has had the bright idea of collating links to articles on the Region's websites in a weekly digest of what has been making the headlines. This should, perhaps, be compiled on a Tuesday to give the reporters time to wax lyrical over the weekend's victories and other causes celebres. New boards filled with cards donated by BridgeNZNew boards filled with cards donated by BridgeNZPat and Martin Oyston of BridgeNZ in Wanganui have supplied the Waikato-Bays Region with a shiny new set of 32 bright yellow boards for educational use, donating all the of cards needed to fill the boards. Initially these boards are being put to good use by Jane Stearns as she gives the Huntly club a dose of her special magic.

I/J Leagues take another step forward at Tauranga

The fourth round of nine in the Waikato-Bays Intermediate League Championship took place in Tauranga on the 18th of June. The room was packed with a field of 33 players. Peter and June Hagan of Tauranga had an excellent day, coming top East-West in the morning and top North-South in the afternoon to win the day outright. They had a clear lead over second-placed John Little and Graham Saunders of the Waikato club who were followed by two of the region's nominees to attend the Inter-Provincials in Dunedin, Hattie Curtis and Bruce Ballard of Katikati.
