Roundup - Week 41

The premiere event of the week was undoubtedly Cambridge's 40th Anniversary celebration. Everyone dressed in ruby(ish) colours and the night was styled "Ruby Murray" - Cockney rhyming slang for curry .. which is what was on the menu for dinner that night. Over 90 attendees including half a dozen foundation members enjoyed their curry followed by one huge cake. For old times' sake a few hands of bridge followed.

With the dust slowly settling after National Congress in Hamilton our weekly whip around the Region's websites starts with Cambridge who are both gobsmacked and delighted to achieve not just one but TWO national titles after a break of thirty years. Cambridge members won both the Open Restricted events - Pairs and Swiss Pairs.

Roundup - Week 38

The National Congress is raging on in Hamilton as we speak: many of our clubs are represented in this the most prestigious event of the bridging year. One combination that is surely unique would be that of N Russell Thomson of the Waitomo club parterned by his son Hone of Huntly.

Hone has just completed Jane Stearn's NZB-based course of lessons for beginners at Huntly while Russell is one of just a handful that have attended every Congress since this event's inception in 1985.

Speaking of Huntly: the members experienced a couple of other life-changing events last week. They successfully completed their first night of Teams scored on their new Bridgemates AND they started to make use of the free results service offered to clubs in Waikato-Bays Region that do not have their own very flash web-publishing-with-full-drill-down-capability facility.

Whipping around the Region's websites (so easily accessible from our Home page here) we see that Cambridge is celebrating a National title - the first in 30years by one of its members. We checked whether Bruce and Merle Marr might not have achieved the like and Bruce informed us that he was a member of the combination that won the New Zealand Teams in 1985. They, too, have been regular attendees at all 31 Congresses even though they have lived in Australia these many years.

Oh man! - you gotta see this!!. Teams - Te Aroha STYLE!

Tauranga follows the fortunes of Sam and Jo Simpson who finished a most creditable fifth place in the New Zealand Pairs final. They made it through to the semi-final of the NZ Rubber, too, but fell at this penultimate fence. That was surely a LOT of bridge!

One of the big events of the WBRC year - the one where we all show our faces - the annual Regional Conference was held at the Matamata rooms last Sunday. Full report further down, but an incredible discovery was announced.

Regional Conference takes place at Matamata

Thirteen of the region's 23 clubs were represented by 19 attendees on Sunday the 18th of September along with members of the NZ Bridge board Karen Martelletti and Alan Turner and four of the five Waikato-Bays Regional committee, Ian Moore being overseas. The theme of the day was "Growing our Clubs".

The Thames Restricted was a seminal event for Heartland Bridge. Held at the Brown St rooms last Sunday it attracted 20 tables. Home club Thames was delighted to claim a top place in the Junior-Junior section.

Roundup - Week 35

It was the Mini-Moo's day at Cambridge last Sunday. You can read several success stories celebrating the prowess of the Region's newest players - the winners came from the Matamata club, Cambridge took second placing while newbies from Huntly and Hamilton shared third on the day.

Bridge PoliceBridge PoliceRotorua are announcing that they've finally come over to The Dark Side by joining the 27 other clubs that play the X-Clubs deals and, by the look of things, Mount Maunganui are picking up where Caroline and Murray Wiggins left off at the Cambridge Sixes.

Hamilton celebrates a couple of HUGE successes by Ian Clayton and others - 82%!! - totally amazing!

Grade Teams Final thrashed out at Cambridge

Teams from each end of the region gathered at Cambridge on the last Sunday of August to sort out who would be taking home the three Grade Trophies. This was the final stanza of what started off as the Inter-Club Teams in the Waikato, and the Bay Teams in the Bay of Plenty. The winning and runner-up teams in each grade from each region met in Cambridge to play in three parallel round-robins of three 16-board matches. An Intermediate and a Junior team came all the way from Whakatane, and a couple of Intermediate teams traveled from Thames and Taupo.
