Learn to Play Bridge in 2017

We have 22 bridge clubs in the Waikato Bays with many of them kicking off bridge lessons in the upcoming few weeks.

Waikato Bays directors seminars

Thanks to Allan Joseph for a most entertaining and informative seminar for directors, and thanks to all those who attended. Between the Saturday in Cambridge and Sunday in Rotorua we had about 40 people learning more about directing, so hopefully lots of new directors in our region!

Oh Jane - You've Done It Again!

Jane, Ayako, & BookJane, Ayako, & BookCambridge's pocket rocket Jane Stearns has embarked on an unusual endeavour with support from the Waikato-Bays Regional Committee. Part of Jane's wide range of involvement is working out of the Migrant Centre in Hamilton with migrants and refugees, many of whom have little or no English when they arrive in New Zealand.

But some of them have played cards - some of them have even played Bridge in their own countries.

Looking at the generic of the Cambridge club at least, there would be a considerable drop in numbers should all the foreign-born members not play. One of our most valued members, Ayako Imahashi from Japan, actually came to us from exactly this situation. She had played a little bridge with her family in Japan and was encouraged by the Migrant Centre in Leamington to come along to lessons in Cambridge.

Seminars for Directors by Allan Joseph

Allan JosephAllan JosephAllan Joseph - the game's Mr Nice Guy and a National Director - will be presenting two courses for directors on the weekend 25/26 February. To optimise the distances that attendees will have to travel the Committee has asked Cambridge to host the Saturday session and Rotorua the Sunday - start time 10am with morning tea from 9:30. Toothsome lunches will be provided and there is no charge for attending. It would be good to know approximately how many will be coming so please make an entry on this site. As the new season cranks into gear many clubs around the region are offering not only lessons for beginners but for those keen to advance a bit.

  • Barry Jones assisted by Jenny Millington starts his series of Lessons for Improvers at the Hamilton club on Friday 10th February
  • Clares Coles of the Cambridge club is also offering Lessons for Improvers beginning on Thursday 9th

Looking to improve your bridge? Cambridge Bridge Club has the answer! Their series of improvers lessons kicks off on Thursday 9 February. A range of subjects on offer aimed at those who learned the game in the last few years and beyond.

The director's course at Taupo is now finished, and thanks to all those who attended. We had 7 from Taupo and 3 from other clubs, so there are another 10 potential directors around!

We always need more, so do consider attending the Seminars for Directors by Allan Joseph coming up soon.

New Season Gearing Up

Morris/Henry consultation meetings at Rotorua and Cambridge

Thanks to all those who took the time to attend yesterday's meetings. Allan Morris led these meetings as Stephen Henry was busy with South Island meetings and other commitments.

At Rotorua there were 10 members from 5 clubs (Rotorua, Whakatane, Taupo, Katikati and Waihi) At Cambridge there were 23 members from 10 clubs (Cambridge, Huntly, Hamilton, Putaruru, Te Aroha, Tauranga, Te Awamutu, Morrinsville, Matamata and Taupo)
