TWITs Heating Up

The six-week series of The Waikato Inter-Club Teams is approaching its penultimate round to be held at the Hamilton Bridge Club on Friday 27th July. Things are tight at the top in the competition for Indie Twit. Radars Lot is stretching out in front in the Junior and Waikato Wonders looks to be unassailable in the Oscars.

As there have been five teams in the Juniors and seven in the Indies we have been having a guest appearance by a different Indie team in the Juniors each month. This time it will be Hamilton Mosaic sitting at Table 1 while Ringers will play at Table 11. Here are the current placings:

It's about now that one gets the feeling that the season is at "shoulder" as we approach the main event of the year .. being NZ's own National Congress. This, of course, is still some way off at the end of September. Nevertheless, we have just this last weekend seen the completion of the Bay Pairs with Kate Terry and Judy Pawson of Tauranga coming out on top.

Check out this article concerning an exciting new contest between clubs. Tauranga and Cambridge have a similar level of competition on Wednesday nights - fun/social/newbies type of thing. Karen Martelletti had an inspiration to compare scores using X-Clubs results. The first night was really close.

HUNTLY go INTERNATIONAL!!

John, Lynne and AndreasJohn, Lynne and AndreasWell done to Huntly Club who took part in the UK’s Bill Hughes Memorial Simultaneous Pairs on Friday, June 29th. John Gates and Andreas Theodorou won the Huntly heat with a great score of 62.96%. All heat winners receive two small prizes and a trophy to keep. Huntly say their results have not yet materialised on the global stage but the players wait with bated breath! This event is held each year during the week containing the last Tuesday in June.

Mini Moos Day One at Morrinsville

A highly successful first outing in 2018 for Nick Whitten's Mini Moos programme. There is a new Mini Moos menu provided under the Initiatives tab above to provide a home for this invaluable programme. Along with the long-standing Bay Pairs and the Waikato Area Pairs, the Mini Moos and the TWITs are of great interest to many Waikato-Bays players at different stages of their bridge careers.

New Radio Show for Waikato and New Zealand

Barry Jones and Mereana CullenBarry Jones and Mereana CullenThe first ever broadcast of The Bridge Zone was aired on Wednesday 27 June. A team of eight bridge enthusiasts from Hamilton, Waikato and Cambridge clubs have teamed up to broadcast The Bridge Zone. They hope to raise awareness of the game and encourage people to take part whilst engaging existing bridge players in topics of interest.

Hosted by Community Access Radio and broadcast on Free FM89 the crew of volunteers have learned how to create and record a radio show. Barry Jones and Mereana Cullen co-presented the first show. If you missed it – you can catch it by clicking here

3rd Round 2018 Bay Pairs Mt Manganui

Hi All,
Sunday the 9th June Mount Maunganui Club hosted the 3rd round of the 2018 Bay Pairs.
Winners on the day were Linley Hay and Helen Heuvel (Mount Maunganui), second Joy Bates and Amanda Smith (Tauranga) with Jane and Stephen Searle (Whakatane) third.
Top non open p[air on the day where Derek Moores and Eric Dillon (Kawerau).
Top Intermediate Joy Bates, top Junior(s) Derek Moores and Eric Dillon.
Overall Kate Terry and Judy Pawson are still leading, Joy Bates the Intermediate Section and Mike Newton Junior.
Jo Wenham and Barry Doyle are leading pair non open section.

2nd Round Bay Pairs Tauranga 2018

Hi All,
Sorry for the delay, Sunday 27th May saw the Tauranga Club host the second round of the Bay Pairs.
Winners on the day were Rachelle Pelkman and Murray Woods. Second Marion Kelly and Julie Sheridan and taking out third Stephen Francks and Mike Newton
Top non open pair on the day were Pam Miles and Eric Burnie, play out of the Kawerau Club.
Top Intermediate Ruth Sweatman, top Junior Mike Newton both playing out of the Tauranga Club.
