doggiedoggieThe IPs are one of the premier events on the NZ Bridge calendar pitting Region against Region. Parochialism and bridge passion unites teams of all grades. Everyone will be striving to play their best for their region. Each grade has its own competition and their placings are awarded points which go towards the Dougal McLean Trophy for the top Region.

Listeners of The Bridge Zone Show will know of Professor Samantha Punch's innovative work in exploring the sociology of bridge. Working at Stirling University in Scotland Professor Punch oversees a PhD research project in an emerging academic field exploring interactions within the mind sport, well-being, healthy ageing and social connection as experienced in the bridge world.

One HUGE step forward for X-Clubs

Every day the same hands are played simultaneously at several clubs. At 5pm and 11pm they get scored "across the field" - often over 100 pairs and sometimes over 300 pairs take part from 37 different clubs. The results have always been of interest to many but they're about to get even more interesting to many, many more. Check out this article to see what it's all about.

Waikato Bays Director Seminar

By popular request, we are targeting this years seminar at qualified or very experienced directors in the Waikato-Bays Region, with a view to increasing our pool of tournament directors. There will also be email training on tournament planning during the weeks before.

Rating Points & Tournament Grades 2019

Player rating points updated correctly on Jan 1st and the new tournament grades for 2019 are now available on the NZB site.

NZB Secretary Alister reported the transfer of Australian Masterpoints has not worked for a number of months. He expects the developers to put a fix in place when they return to work. All of the files received from the ABF have been saved and will be uploaded as soon as possible.

WBRC Road Map for 2019

In a recently released newsletter (attached below) your Regional Committee lays out its plans for the 2019 season. Key items include:

  • The Thames Festival which runs from 11-13 January
  • The Intermediate Champions League with double the prize money - $1080
  • The Junior Champions League with four times the prize money at $960
  • A directing seminar by Allan Joseph - date tba
  • Rubber Ducky Day at Putaruru on 7th April
  • Re-Introduction of the Youth Policy
  • Congress Sponsorship for aspiring debutantes
  • The Regional Conference set for 22nd September at Matamata
  • Plan and intent for the IP Trials to be held at Tauranga on 11th & 12 May

The committee wishes all bridge players a safe and happy new season.
