MEET THE INTERPROVINCIALS - Tony Hacking

Tony has been playing Bridge for many years, he was only 13 years old when he first learned to play when he was required to make a fourth on a rainy summer holiday and his interest, if not his skill, in the game has grown over the years. He was born in Belfast at the end of the war and for a long time lived on various Royal Air Force bases, where card parties, usually Bridge or Canasta, were part of the social life. Over the years he has seen, and enthusiastically embraced, every new system and fad that has been introduced. “They do nothing to improve your play but provide a multitude of excuses for your mistakes”. Tony has an arcane hobby, he collects Ottoman Stamps (1863 to 1923) which he writes articles on. He has recently returned from China and India and last year travelled the Silk Road from Turkey to China. Next is the USA where he hopes to learn the ‘Donald System’ where all mistakes can be blamed on someone else! Best of luck, Tony, I hope you and Pat have an enjoyable and successful tournament.

Pamela was born in Wairoa, but due to her father’s occupation, spent her early years moving to different places, each time across the Cook Strait.Pamela and her family have had an exciting life before Bridge, being intrepid sailors. It is ten years now since they arrived back in NZ from their circumnavigation with their family on their yacht Essence. Their children were 5 and 7 years old when they left NZ and 12 and 14 when they sailed back into our waters. Their adventures were many and it certainly was a different, wonderful and simple way of life, having few possessions and clothes to match. They all had a slightly wild look about them when friends and family welcomed them home. Her introduction to Bridge came when her husband's Aunty Helen thrust a flyer into her hand about a year after her family arrived at the Mount, saying "'this is for you". She looked at the lessons on offer and went along, loving it from the first night.

MEET THE INTERPROVINCIALS - Brian Gallaher

Brian Sullivan, Bren Birss, Pamela Pedersen, Brian GallaherBrian Sullivan, Bren Birss, Pamela Pedersen, Brian GallaherBrian was introduced to Bridge at an early age when, during his mother’s Bridge parties, he was obliged to fill in while his mother got supper ready. They formed a useful partnership until he married and had children, when family life took precedence. His efforts to encourage his wife to play Bridge have failed, given that she prefers to watch paint dry! His daughter enjoys rowing, which is where Brian spends much of his spare time these days - a strange sport as his objective when sitting down is to relax, not get totally exhausted (Congress doesn’t count apparently)!
