New Bridge Laws - get the word out there!

Thanks to Murray and Caroline Wiggins for their seminar today, educating our region's directors on The Laws of Duplicate Bridge 2017. These come into effect in New Zealand on 1 August, and there are a few changes from the 2007 Laws that we all need to be aware of.

Thanks also to all the directors who gave up their Sunday morning to come to the seminar. I forgot to do a head-count, but we had directors from Cambridge, Hamilton, Huntly, Katikati, Matamata, Mount Maunganui, Morrinsville, Putaruru, Rotorua, Taupo, Tauranga, Te Aroha, Te Awamutu, Te Puke and Waihi.

Report from National Conference

Last weekend was the annual NZ Bridge National Conference, where the Board members and the regional chairpersons get together in Wellington. We hear about what other regions are doing, listen to presentations from the board, and discuss remits from clubs and/or regional committees.

To all clubs re 2017 bridge laws

To all clubs:

You will have recently received a bulletin from Murray Wiggins, NZ Bridge Chief Director, regarding the 2017 Laws of Contract Bridge.

The Waikato Bays seminar has now been confirmed as Sunday 2nd July at the Matamata Bridge Club.
Morning tea at 9:30am followed by the seminar at 10am, and estimated finish time is 12-12:30pm.

2017 Inter-provincial trials

Thanks to all who participated in the inter-provincial trials over the weekend. As usual, it was very well organised by the Tauranga Club, and smoothly run by director Dallas Dagg and scorer Jan Spaans. We had 20 pairs participating in the open/women/seniors field, and 8 intermediate pairs which was a pleasing turnout.

Challenge to all WB Clubs - it's time for Rubber Bridge again!

As you undoubtedly know, each year the Dan Gifford Rubber Bridge competition is played at National Congress and pairs from all regions participate.

The Waikato-Bays has had some very good partnerships in the past who have given the other regional pairs a good run for their money, including Christine and Jenna Gibbons who won the national title in 2012.

NZ Bridge Board Elections close soon - please vote

To all Waikato Bays Bridge Clubs:

Voting for the elections for the Chairperson of NZ Bridge and two Board members closes soon (I think votes have to be received by 14 March, but please check your voting papers)

Please, if haven't voted already, vote now!

You will have received much correspondence on this subject. The Regional Committee has passed on all correspondence we have been asked to, although this does not imply an endorsement or otherwise of the opinions expressed.

Please make up your own minds as to who you think will best represent NZ Bridge going forward.

Waikato Bays directors seminars

Thanks to Allan Joseph for a most entertaining and informative seminar for directors, and thanks to all those who attended. Between the Saturday in Cambridge and Sunday in Rotorua we had about 40 people learning more about directing, so hopefully lots of new directors in our region!

Here is some feedback from participants:

Directors please!

The director's course at Taupo is now finished, and thanks to all those who attended. We had 7 from Taupo and 3 from other clubs, so there are another 10 potential directors around!

We always need more, so do consider attending the Seminars for Directors by Allan Joseph coming up soon.

Morris/Henry consultation meetings at Rotorua and Cambridge

Thanks to all those who took the time to attend yesterday's meetings. Allan Morris led these meetings as Stephen Henry was busy with South Island meetings and other commitments.

At Rotorua there were 10 members from 5 clubs (Rotorua, Whakatane, Taupo, Katikati and Waihi) At Cambridge there were 23 members from 10 clubs (Cambridge, Huntly, Hamilton, Putaruru, Te Aroha, Tauranga, Te Awamutu, Morrinsville, Matamata and Taupo)

Waikato Bays Rubber Bridge champions

Congratulations to Jo & Sam Simpson from Tauranga, who are the 2016 Waikato Bays Rubber Bridge Champions.

Thank you to all the other pairs who played this year and supported rubber bridge in our region. We had many more entries than in previous years, so I hope you all enjoyed it and will come to play again next year. Even better, bring another pair with you!

Good luck to Jo & Sam who will be now playing in the knock-out Dan Gifford National Rubber Bridge Championships, starting on Friday night at National Congress
