Newcomers Tokoroa/Putaruru Blitz the Waikato InterClub Teams

Saturday 4th July - huge event! Three teams - Open, Intermediate and Junior - from each of eight Waikato clubs slugged it out in the annual Waikato InterClub Teams held at the Hamilton clubrooms.

The Hamilton folk did us proud with base tables set up attractively for each club team in the O'Neill Room while the matches took place in the adjoining Richmond Room.

The WINNERS!! the Tokoroa/Putaruru TeamThe WINNERS!! the Tokoroa/Putaruru Team
These events are just the BEST thing for club spirit and none more so this year than for newcomers the combined team of Tokoroa and Putaruru. Spearheaded by NZ's highest all-time points earner Michael Ware this unknown quantity surged to the front early and never looked like being bested all day long. They justly earned the Waikato InterClubs Teams trophy .. wherever it may be. It's a wooden shield, apparently, and if anyone knows who's got would they please ask them to send it back.

Also being determined were the Waikato entries to the region's annual Grades Trophy matches - to be held at Cambridge on the 30th of August. The two highest scoring teams in each grade earned the right to front up to a similar field from the Bay of Plenty on that day. The winners of the Open section were the Hamilton team with the Tokoroa/Putaruru Opens also qualifying. In the Intermediates top were Tokoroa/Putaruru again, to be joined by the Ints from Matamata. And AGAIN the Tokoroa/Putaruru Juniors with the best total score of the day ahead of the Junior team from the Thames club. Jane Stearns must be pleased as punch after all the work she has put into rejuvenating bridge in the South Waikato this year! Full results on this website under Results > General Results. Many thanks to the Hamilton club for the seamless running of this fun day which was enjoyed immensely by everyone there.
