So what is bridge all about? A quick synopsis of the game can be viewed here ... or you can click here to see one of our local tutors from Cambridge Jane Stearns give you a 15 minute introduction to the game of bridge.

We think it is a fantastic game ... it's a bit like Five Hundred and is derived from a card game called Whist. It involves two partnerships playing against each other to win tricks and gain points. At the end of each session of Bridge, your scores are compared with the scores of the other players who have played the same cards as you have ... so the luck of being dealt good (or bad) hands has been removed.

There are nearly 14,000 registered bridge players in New Zealand and 107 clubs covering urban and rural locations. While it can take many years to fully understand all facets of bridge - it is the myriad of strategies and combinations of hands that make the game so addictive and enjoyable.

You can play bridge competitively or socially - New Zealand currently holds the World Championship Pairs title which was won last year by Aucklanders, Ashley Bach and Michael Cornell ... but 80% of bridge players are keen to just have a friendly and social game of bridge which is encouraged at all the bridge clubs in New Zealand.

Bridge lets you sit down with people that you may have never met and have a wonderful time. You can play bridge at local clubs, NZ wide as a club visitor, on a cruise ship, at tourist resorts, while on holiday (as it is a worldwide game) and you can also play it online competitively - there are websites available for all abilities.

It is never too early , or too late, to learn the game of bridge - give it a go ... hopefully you will become hooked as well.
