Grade Teams Finalised

With the completion of the Bay Teams event held in Rotorua today, we are now in a position to formally invite the following teams to the Final of the Waikato Bays Grade Teams Trophies to be held at the Cambridge Bridge Club on the 25th of August.

Our strategic plan has a focus on growing membership, club participation and tournament participation. All ideal as they contribute to the well-being of Clubs and the game as a whole. As previously reported over the last 18 months we have seen growth in all areas which is particularly encouraging.

Waikato Bays IP Team accommodated by Pub Charity

The Waikato Bays Regional Committee applied to Pub Charity Ltd for funding to assist our Inter-Provincial representative team with accommodation during the Inter Provincial Championship in Christchurch at the end of the year.

We are very pleased to announce that our application this year was again successful. We received $4695.65 which is the full amount we applied for.

NZB Website Improvements Listed

Alister Stuck, permanent secretary on New Zealand Bridge reports on upgrades made to the website in the last three weeks

Transfer of Australian Masterpoints

We now have an automation function in place enabling us to transfer these on a monthly basis. I have cleared the backlog from last year and have run the files for the first 4 months of this year.

NZB Constitution Review

John Skipper announced the release of the draft NZ Bridge Constitution. The draft document is now ready for all to read and consider. Click on the attachments below to download both this document and its associated feedback form. Feedback is sought and changes can still be made ahead of the final voting at the AGM in September this year. Key changes are:

  • The document is considerably shorter than the existing Constitution

The Trials Are Over

Two days of play at Tauranga have produced our 16-strong IP squad to contest the 2019 Inter-Provincial event in Christchurch on November 23rd. In the Opens we have Yuzhong Chen and Noel Grigg accompanied by Tom Winiata and Tom Henwood. The Womens team will be comprised of Christine and Jenna Gibbons along with Kate Terry and Judy Pawson (selected) while the Seniors are Julie Sheridan and Karen Martelletti accompanied by Ella Gray and Michael Neels. Our Intermediates are to be Ted Cliffin and Barbara McFarlane along with Judith Howard and Joanne Swanwick.

Rodney Harris

Rodney HarrisRodney HarrisMorrinsville Contract Bridge Club members are deeply saddened by the sudden death of a long standing member Rodney Harris.

Rodney was a member for nearly 40 years and many club trophies bear his name-including Club Championship, Individual Championships and Morrinsville Tournament several times.
Rodney was also an associate member of Hamilton Contract Bridge, playing regularly on Wednesday nights.

Training for directors

The Rotorua Bridge Club have arranged a training day for directors and are inviting aspiring directors from other Waikato Bays clubs to attend. This will be held on Saturday 25 May, and is intended for new directors, or those who wish to prepare for the club directors exam. Waikato-Bays Junior League kicks off in Cambridge

Bernadette and HesterBernadette and HesterA last minute entry into the Waikato Bays Junior Bridge Championship League by four players from Waitomo Bridge Club had excellent results for their club. The first tournament was hosted by Cambridge Bridge Club and, competing against players from across Waikato, Bernadette Barry Addy and her partner Hester Bolitho won the first event. Cambridge husband and wife team, Chris and Hennie Van Empel were close behind and Bob and Ros Strawbridge, also from Waitomo came in third. The next event in the series will be hosted by Matamata Beridge Club on May 4th.
