  • Completion of the NZ Wide Pairs - $18k raised for Youth Bridge - National Teams in Nelson and the Inter-Provincials in Christchurch
  • The Wellington region takes Dougal McLean trophy for the fourth year in a row
  • Subcommittee on track with recommendations re the future of Regional Committees - nothing to happen before 2021 so elections will be held mid-2020
  • RBM job vacancies in Otago/Southland and Central Districts

Allan Morris updates us with a summary of what's been going on lately. The new Constitution has been registered and the revised Manual is under way. Congress was very successful with record numbers attending. Special mention of Michael Whibley being awarded for Best Declarer Play in the World for 2019. Upcoming in November is the Babich Simultaneous Pairs, the National Teams in Nelson and the IP's in Christchurch. A special word on clubs having a Health & Safety Policy - a template is available. Review of the roles and functions of RBM's and Regional Committees is under way. And changes to director training and assessment. It's all go Folks. Download the attachment for a good read.

Joanne Swanick and Judith HowardJoanne Swanick and Judith HowardCongratulations to Joanne Swanwick and Judith Howard from Matamata Bridge club who held on to their lead today, playing at Cambridge, in the eighth and final session of this year’s Intermediate Championships. Carol Crowfoot and Sabrina Peters from Thames took second place with Derek and Frances Rankin from Taupo in third place. Prizes totalling $1080 for the Leagues were presented by Michael Neels to the top ten players.

Ronnie & Athol with Mike NeelsRonnie & Athol with Mike NeelsThe sixth and final round of the Waikato-Bays Junior League was taken out by Tauranga's Ronnie and Athol Ryan at Te Awamutu on Sunday 13th October. They finished with 27 points, 8 points ahead of second-placed clubmates Jill Stewart and Kathy Abel. Cambridge's Chris and Henny van Empel came third 2 points further back.

TWITs Finish on a High Note

Eighteen teams met for the last of six rounds of the 2019 TWITs (The Waikato Interclub Teams) on Friday 23rd of August. The six Open teams had completed a double round-robin over the preceding five outings and the Intermediate/Junior section of ten teams a single round-robin plus a filler last month.

Sam & Jo Going in to Bat for the Region

Sam & Jo at the Cambridge SixesSam & Jo at the Cambridge SixesFor a second time since arriving in the region Sam and Jo Simpson of Tauranga have come top of the knock-out Rubber Bridge competition. They will go forward to the final stage at the National Congress on Friday 27th September. It's been a busy, and rewarding, week for Sam and Jo as, after taking second prize in the Cambridge Sixes Trivia, they also won the Hamilton 3-nighter 5A Swiss on Wednesday to make all their traveling worth while. They are certainly very keen on their bridge! Both have recently made the grade to Silver Grand Master.

Both sides report the final vs Brian Gallaher and Brian Sullivan of the Waikato club was an exciting match. This hoot of a report from one of the players:

Herman and Yuzhong Win the WAPs

Herman and Yuzhong (file photo)Herman and Yuzhong (file photo)Thirty Pairs played in the sixth and final round of the Waikato Area Pairs at Hamilton on Sunday 4th August. Winners on the day were Ian and Cynthia Clayton edging Barry Jones and Jenny Millington. Third-placed Herman Yuan played with Jeffrey Chang who was subbing for Yuzhong Chen who was off chasing glory at the North Island Pairs in Wellington (came 17th, apparently). With a 30 point lead in the competition Yuzhong could feel fairly comfortable with being elsewhere. And so it came to pass. Herman and Yuzhong victorious followed at a distance by WAPs co-ordinator Anna Kalma playing with Noel Grigg followed by wine and pizza for all at the end of the WAPs for 2019.
